Goza Primary School has been without proper access to drinkable water since its opening in 2014.
-
The school is not connected to the municipal grid. And with 1,400 pupils to teach, adequate water supply has become even more crucial.
-
There are two JoJo tanks that provide water for the school – but is said to not be safe to drink.
-
They are meant to be filled once or twice a week, but sometimes the trucks to refill the tanks don’t pitch up.
-
The neighbouring school and a few good Samaritans have offered to help by connecting a pipe to the school
-
These few taps are the only access for pupils to drink water, wash their hands and clean their lunch boxes.
-
But when the neighbouring school is using water, the taps in Goza Primary release little to no water.
-
Toilets become clogged and cannot be flushed when the school runs out of water.
-
When there is no water left, pupils are sometimes forced to relieve themselves behind the school in the bushes.
-
Parents are frustrated but they can’t move their children to other nearby schools as it is the only one teaches in Xitsonga and IsiXhosa.
-
In the time of COVID-19, the school struggles and relies on sanitisers to keep clean.
-
The school has been pleading with the Department of Education for assistance since it opened in 2014.

Gauteng MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the school in 2016 to assess the situation. But the school says the interactions have not been fruitful.
